The British government has tightened its immigration laws, making it nearly impossible for migrants who arrive illegally—whether by small boats or hidden in vehicles—to obtain UK citizenship.
Home Office Declares Strict Measures Against Illegal Entrants
According to the BBC, the Home Office has issued a statement confirming that anyone entering the UK illegally will have their citizenship application rejected. The new guidelines specify that individuals who undertake dangerous journeys to enter the UK unlawfully will generally be denied citizenship, regardless of how long they have resided in the country.
Human Rights Groups and Politicians Criticize the Decision
This decision has sparked criticism from human rights organizations, the Refugee Council, and several members of the Labour Party. MP Stella Creasy condemned the move, stating that it would permanently relegate refugees to second-class citizenship.
New Rules Effective from February 2025
The updated immigration guidelines clarify that from February 10, 2025, anyone who has entered the UK illegally will typically be denied citizenship, no matter how much time has passed since their arrival.
Additional Restrictions on Undocumented Entrants
A newly introduced clause further states that individuals who enter the UK without a valid visa or travel authorization—especially those who take dangerous routes, such as crossing by small boats or hiding in vehicles—will also be refused citizenship.
A Harder Path to UK Citizenship
Previously, asylum seekers who arrived in the UK through illegal means had to wait at least 10 years before their citizenship application was considered. However, the new policy makes the process even more difficult, significantly reducing their chances of becoming British citizens.
